YAKIMONO
                   (Pottery & Ceramics)

Japanese pottery is notorious world-wide for its beauty, technical elegance, and exquisite
simplicity of style, form and color.  Not only is Japan the pottery center of the world, ceramics
hold the highest level of appreciation here as well.  It was because of the founders of the tea
ceremony that ceramics began to be judged by its utility, rather than its outward beauty.
Pottery has many uses in Japan, aside from its importance to the tea ceremony, some of which
are needed or used daily, including:

    Dobin. . . . . . . Teapots
    Hashoki. . . . . .Chopstick Rests
    Kabin. . . . . . .  Vases for Flowers
    Koro. . . . . . .   Hand Censors for Incense Ceremony
    Sakazuki. . . . . Sake’ Cups
    Suiteki. . . . . .  Small Water Container used in Calligraphy
    Tokkuri. . . . .  Sake Containers
    Yunomi. . . . . .Teacups

Yakimono refers to pottery in general, but is characterized by a rough appearance.  Japanese usually distinguish between stoneware and porcelain, which are the two basic types of ceramic ware.
