The art of the sword evolved from a martial art heritage dating back more than three thousand years to about the time of the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. It has been known by some that the weapons and some of the ancient arts were used to help defend territorial boundaries in the early settlements. It was considered as a way to fight and survive from the many invaders of the time period. The unique sword technique, which was known as "Bon Gook Gum Bup" or the "Native sword" was said to have been developed by the warriors of Shilla's Hwa Rang. This theory was thought to have been dated back about two thousand years ago at the time period when there was four separate kingdoms or countries ruling the country known as China, today. These countries were in a constant struggle which caused them to collide in a conflict for possession of lands; known today as East Asia, which consisted mainly of North and South Korea and part of Eastern China. This are seemed to have been the primary target because of its unique quality as a great defense barrier. |
