In South East Asia there are many different things you can do in each country. In this section, I am also going to include some of the island groupings in the region of the South China Seas.
First, its off
to Kampuchea a.k.a. Cambodia to visit the tenth largest city in the world
as of 1000 A.D. Ankor Wat! Built by the people known as the Khmer,
the palace at Ankor is truly a site to behold. There are many tourism
agencies that specialize in package trips to see the city. However,
I found one site that interested me greatly. Put together by Waseda
University in Japan this
site goes over the many different architectural structures in Asia.
Next its time
to catch some of the best surf of your life in Tavarua! Leave your
wet suit at home, and be sure to pack extra boards, this will be the time
of your life! There is no other place in the world that can offer
the same kind of waves as this tiny island. World famous surfers
from every corner of the globe can be found here among the 10'-15' hollow
waves and empty line-ups. All you need to do is click on the above
picture and you can set up a vacation that you'll never forget. Just
be sure to watch out for shallow reefs and sea snakes. Click on the
beach and you're on your way.
And now for the modern
day version of Sodom and Gamora, Bangkok! Few cities have ever been able
to obtain a reputation as infamous as Bangkok. The nightlife and the clubs
are world-renoun as is the shadier side of the city. One of the major
attractions of this city is the cost. For younger people on a tight budget,
Thailand is definitely the place to go. Hotels and meals seldom run into
the double digits in American currency and nightlife in the bars and clubs doesn't
stop until dawn. Nightlife is not the only thing to be found in the most
cosmopolitan city in South East Asia. There are many other activities
such as Mui Thai boxing, the royal barges (one is pictured above), and the Temple
of the Golden Buddha. For a good site that details much of what can be
found in the city just click here
for a direct link.
You
can't visit South East Asia without making a stop in Vietnam. The government
of Vietnam has been very active in creating an environment that is friendly
to tourists and consequently, many more tourists have been going to Vietnam.
Vietnam is home to many beautiful beaches, excellent surf, fantastic Buddhist
temples, and lush rain forests. One of the things that the traveler to
Vietnam has to prepare for is the cuisine. Food in Vietnam can consist
of everything from frogs and snakes to monkeys. Food can be very mild
in some regions and hot enough to make an Indian sweat in others. Even
the alcohol in Vietnam is unique, take this picture of snake wine for example.
Maybe its just me but snake wine!! Going to market in Vietnam even has
a twist, below is a picture of people at a floating market. Perhaps the
coolest site I found about Vietnam was a site entitled sounds of Vietnam.
On this site you can hear lots of different clips from the Vietnam war including
the original "Good morning Vietnam" announcement. Just click on the snake
wine.
Lastly, did you know it is "Visit
Laos Year"? Its true, the Laotian government
has designated 1999-2000 as "Visit Laos Year". Although Laos is not one
of the most heavily visited places in Asia it certainly has its attractions.
As with most other S.E. Asian countries Laos has many fine Buddhist temples
as well as archeological regions. However, one of the things that must
be taken advantage of in Laos is the wonderful marine life. Laos is famous
for its diving and sea kayaking opportunities. In order to set up a trip
just visit this site.
