Note on Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), who, in 1780 published
Vindication of the Rights of Men. Later, in 1792 she: ìadvocated
suffrage for women.î In1792 she published
Vindication of the Rights of Women
ìThus did Vindication plead for equal education and
economic opportunities for women and a voice for
them in government. ... created a great sensation immediately
upon publication. Translations were issued in French and
German.The book both shocked and scandalized the
conservative and puritanical, who considered it a gross
offense against decency and womanly reserve. Horace
Walpole [1717-1797] called the author a ëhyena in
petticoatsí and a ëphilosophical serpent.íî
