Course Objectives:
To survey the environmental planning profession to see what practicing environmental planners do, what agencies they work for, what laws they work with and what techniques they utilitze in their work.

To be able to provide scientific underpinning for environmental decision making.

To access the research frontiers in the profession in order to determine what information useful to specific environmetal planning projects is not known and how it can be obtained or generated.

To build skill and experience in preparing a research report or a planning project including, but not limited to: defining the problem, literature review, field study, data analysis, report writing, graphics preparation and formal presentation.

Readings:
There is no adeqauate textbook for this subject. Seminar participants will be supplied with a set of readings for use during the first four weeks of the semester. Thereafter, information will be obtained on an as needed basis from the Internet, government documents and library resources.

Student Responsibilities: As in any true seminar situation, all students will participate in every class session. Evaluation will be based on weekly preparedness and quality of participation. The semester will conclude with written research papers of a quality to be published in a local geography or planning journal. Formal presentations will accompany the written papers. Please read the University Catalogue regarding policy for attendance and incomplete grades.
