TIPS FOR WRITING ESSAY EXAMS

  1. Read the question, what does it ask you to do; describe, argue, list, outline, explain?

  2. Try to make one point for each "point".

  3. Use specialized vocabulary, if appropriate.

  4. Be concise and clear.

  5. Use an introduction sentence and a conclusion sentence.

  6. Balance all the questions.

  7. Do not use slang or conversational tone.

  8. Wherever opinion is given, be sure to give reasons for that opinion.

  9. Refer to authors of assigned readings to demonstrate that you are familiar with them.

  10. Write on one side of the page and be neat.
