(CNN) -- A high school student took an unknown number of people hostage at gunpoint inside an Oroville, California, school Friday, authorities said.

The male student had fired one shot into the air, but no one was hit, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Department.

The incident at Las Plumas High School began about 9 a.m. (noon ET), officials said.

The hostages, believed to number eight to 10, were being held in the band room, the sheriff's department said.

A SWAT team was on scene and may be communicating with the student.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said it is assisting Butte County authorities. Department spokeswoman Janet Upton said a teacher may also be held at gunpoint.

The school district said all of its six schools were on lockdown. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
