Course Objectives:

During this course each student shall:

1. Develop a deeper and broader self-awareness their abilities, skills, values, strengths, and interests in relation to career, academic and life goals.

2. Explore sources of career information and labor market information that can help them make more informed career and life choices.

3. Be familiar with campus career programs, career resources, and work experience opportunities available to assist in important career and life decisions.

5. Develop skills in using career resources, academic and career decision making and planning.

6. Develop skills in communication, resume development, interviewing and other job search techniques.


Required Course Materials:

Betty Michelozzi. Coming Alive from Nine to Five, 5th edition

Self-Directed Search Assessment, & The Occupational Finder (Brown envelope packet at Bookstore)

Sheldon, G. Class Notes Packet at A.S. Bookstore

Pay Course Fee ($10.00) at cashiering by end of first week of class (covers assessment cost)

BRING TEXTBOOK AND CLASS NOTES PACKET TO ALL CLASS SESSIONS


Requirements for Course Credit:

1. Attend class & participate in discussions & exercises. More than 2 absenses will jeopardize credit.

Class attendance is vital because of the in-class activities. Attendance will be taken.

2. Complete all assessments and exercises assigned weekly in class.

3. Pass the mid-term and final with a "C" or better.

4. Develop a list of your job related characteristics and skills.

5. Develop a personal Career Plan (identifying an occupation/career direction, labor market information on the career, potential employers, internships/experience, and academic preparation needed).

6. Complete informational interviews of persons working in a field of your interest.

7. Develop a resume and cover letter.

8. Meet individually with the instructor to discuss assessments & career plan progress.
