Jackie Hudson, Philosophical Educator
My goal as an educator is to help learners develop their potential
as humans. In particular, I try to educe more skillful thinking and more
skillful moving from individuals. For this to happen, learners need to appreciate
that they have undeveloped potential, that it can be developed through their
agency, and that it is in their best interests to do so. Generally this
realization generates a little enthusiasm, and if that is coupled with appealing
opportunities to respond to appropriate challenges, learning is educed.
Attention to safety is critical, and some fun is fundamental. This seems
to work best if individual interests and experiences can be incorporated.
Before long there is apt to be sustained engagement and effort, and eventually
excellence. To the extent that the learner's agency remains central to this
process, the learner should be able to extend this experience and/or expand
into related experiences after the period of formal learning ends.
