PHED 224 -- Biomechanical Analysis
Browse Biomechanics
Assignment 3
Purpose
As you use the library to help answer your biomechanical questions, it is
important that you know what types of biomechanical materials are available
and where they are located. Through this assignment you should a) get a
first approximation of the breadth of biomechanics, b) gain experience in
locating a variety of biomechanics literature in our library, c) get a feel
for what is covered in biomechanical research articles including what is
easier/harder to understand, and d) begin to identify the kinds of biomechanical
sources that are the most interesting to you.
Assignment
1. Locate and look over six articles (and the like) about biomechanics.
You should spend about as much time browsing to see what is available as
you spend actually reading articles. Refer to our biomechanics
bibliography for library locations. Variety is nice. Try to select one
article from each of the following categories:
a. International Society of Biomechanics in Sports proceedings
(Biomechanics in Sports I, II, etc.) on reserve
b. Journal of Applied Biomechanics
c. Journal of Biomechanics
d. Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport OR International
Society of Biomechanics proceedings (Biomechanics I, II, etc.) OR
Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise OR Research Quarterly
for Exercise and Sport OR Exercise and Sports Science Reviews
OR any physical therapy or athletic training source
e. Athletic Journal OR Strategies OR JOPERD OR any qualitative
source of biomechanics (e.g., coaching journal, how-to book, popular magazines
like Runner's World, etc.)
f. Thesis or dissertation from University of Oregon microforms
2. For each article write the citation (minimum: title, first author, source)
and your subjective opinion about the article. For example: Did you like
it? What did you like or dislike about it? Was it easy enough to read? If
not, what made it difficult to read? Were some aspects of the article easier
or more interesting than other aspects? Did it seem helpful?
