It's not too early to start thinking about returning to Asilomar and meeting up with all your friends, old and new. The conference planning committee met on January 11 at Long Beach State and after a day of spirited discussion and lots of hard work, have come up with what looks to be an outstanding conference. To start there is our theme: "Women on Women: Claiming Power, Space and Community in the 21st Century". We believe that this theme is the essence of Western Society's role for the future. Our next goal in planning the conference was to make certain that there was a nice blend of scholarship, professional service and just plain fun! Susan Wilkinson is already planning a golf outing. In addition to the great scholarly presentations that the women of the Society always provide, we have a new addition to the program this year. We are going to have our first All-Society Symposium. A variety of Western Society scholars and practitioners, representing the diversity of Western Society, will present on the theme "Empowering the Female Body". This should be an exciting addition to the conference. We also have lined up some outstanding speakers. Our Keynote speaker on Thursday night will be Dr. Patricia Vertinsky from the University of British Columbia. Pat is a Sport Historian whose groundbreaking book The eternally wounded woman: Women, doctors, and exercise in the late nineteenth century, is still considered a benchmark in the field. In addition, Dr. Mary Jo Kane will join us on Friday. Mary Jo is a well-known sport sociologist and director of the Tucker Center for Girls' and Women's Sports at the University of Minnesota. Finally, following up on last year's inspirational talk by Olympic Gold Medallist Lucinda Adams, on Saturday we have at least one Olympic Gold Medallist coming to talk to us. We also have planned a number of activities for the "Free-time" that we have scheduled both Friday and Saturday afternoon. Friday night will be both educational and fun as Rita and Maureen are planning another great surprise for us! All of our traditional activities remain, as well as some new traditions. So, mark your calendars and we will see you in Asilomar Thursday, November 20 -Sunday, November 23, 2003. I want to thank the Conference Planning Committee members who came to Long Beach in January: Laura Chase (Laura is a new member who teaches at Cal Poly Pomona-Welcome Laura!!); Rita Liberti, Kim Machan, Ann Fran Maliszewski, Maureen Smith, and WS President Sharon Guthrie as well as our other great Planning Committee members Tamar Semerjian, Diane Higgs and NiCole Martinez.
