Biography
Jonathan Knolle is an instructional designer for California State University, Sacramento’s Academic Technology and Creative Services where he focuses on the design and development of quality hybrid and online courses.
Prior to his position at Sac State, Jon was a founding partner of the Chico-based instructional design and consulting company, LearningChange. Among his priorities at LearningChange were the oversight of the development of multimedia projects for instruction and training as well as marketing and promotion.
Jon is an experienced instructional designer and trainer with a strong background in Web-based instructional delivery. As an Instructional Technology Consultant for California State University, Chico from 2000 - 2003, Jon contributed to the success of the Satellite to Internet transition for the Chico Distance and Online Education (CDOE) program by serving as a resource for the program’s faculty staff and students. Through a series of workshops that he developed, Jon provided CDOE faculty with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful online instructors in both synchronous and asynchronous Web-based teaching environments. In addition to his involvement in faculty training, Jon helped to establish and manage a course development process and staff of interns to assist faculty in providing course material in the online. Jon has shared his experiences in online course development and delivery through presentations at conferences including ASTD, CATS, and Syllabus. Jon continues to consult educators and trainers on technical and pedagogical issues related to teaching with technology.
Jon is proud to have had the opportunity to put his knowledge of online learning and instructional design to use and share his experience as an adjunct faculty member in the Communication Design Department at CSU, Chico. From 2001-2009, Jon taught courses in Instructional Design & Technology and Internet Communications. His courses have always included Web-based components that allowed student interactions and learning to extend beyond the classroom. His expertise in course design has been acknowledged by the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching when three of his courses were named “Exemplary Online Courses” in spring 2004 and an additional two were recognized in 2006. In addition to Communication Design, Jon has taught for the Management Department at CSU, Chico.
Although Jon’s most recent focus has been the Internet and online education, he also has a strong background in graphic design and visual communication. Jon has received numerous awards and accolades for his advertising and publication design projects as well as his newspaper design projects which were recognized in 2000 by the Scripps Howard Newspaper Foundation. For many years, Jon has worked as a freelance graphic designer and his work is featured in a variety of Northern California publications including magazines, newspapers, and books. More recently, Jon’s designs work has included a number of multimedia & Web design projects which include work for Fox News Corporation, Honda Motorcycles, Warner Brothers Studios, United States Air Force Medical Services, The United Methodist Publishing Company, and LearningChange’s Inspire! Youth Series and Team Essentials Series.
Jon is a graduate of the CSU, Chico Instructional Technology program where he completed coursework in multimedia design, instructional product development and evaluation of instruction. In addition to his degree in Instructional Technology, Jon has minors in Human Resource Management and Business Administration. Jon completed a Master’s Degree in Instructional technology at CSU, Chico in December 2002 where he focused his research on effective use of synchronous online technologies to deliver instruction.
