DESCRIPTION:
- Most diversity in soft acidic water
- Also found in quiet water and in marginal vegetation in rushing streams
- Ocassionally found in ground water
- High salinity tolerance
- Saline lakes, ephemeral pools
- All are freshwater, lentic system
DISTRIBUTION:

Widespread; occuring in all but the harshes fresh water habitats
- Most abundant in lakes, ponds and sluggish streams
- Sea level to arctic to tropical latitudes
