BEHAVIOR:

 

EMERGENCE:

  • Metamorphosis is minimal, one external change between a newly emergant and an adult takes place
  • A progressive concentration of pigmentation occurs along with a continuous increase in differentiation of segmental appendages
  • 3-12 moults take place until they reach maturity but moulting continues to occur throughout their life

OVIPOSITION:

  • Fertilization-transfer of spermatophores
  • Eggs may be laid singly or in clumps

ACTIVITY:

  • The pigmentation of their exterior cuticle allows them to thermoregulate
  • Collembola can be found basking in the sunlight hours

LOCOMOTION:

  • The furcula is used to spring them in a forward motion
  • They climb and crawl
