Size range: <7mm (Thorp, 1991 pg.629)Distinguishing features: The Ôdance
fliesÕ are distinguished by their twists and turns in aerobatic maneuvering
close to the surface of still or slow moving water. (Oldroyd, 1965)
The adult has a very long proboscis for probing flowers with a varied
shape and spacing of their eyes. The male eyes are enlarged until they
almost meet their antennae. The larvae are distinguishable by their
over abundance through out the world, spread across mud flats, the surface
of the water or the seashore. They are completely aquatic with developed
abdominal prolegs and hooked crochets. Larva: 7-8 pairs of abdominal
prolegs and pair of caudal respiratory appendages. (Thorp, 1991 pg.629)

FEEDING GROUP:
- Behavioral
Functional feeding group: The adult dance flies are carnivorous feeders
(Oldroyd, 1965). The larva have also been observed feeding on carrion.
(Williams et al., 1992)
