Station 1: The Yearbook: Images of High School

The pictures below were taken from the graduating class (1987) of a high school in New York state (I found them in an online yearbook). Take a close, careful look at each picture, and imagine the students' lives as high schoolers.
 

Thinking about individuals:

Do you suppose the person pictured was:

What clues do you use to make such guesses? How accurate do you suppose your guesses are?


Thinking about groups:

Do you see anything that connects the different pictures? Is there anything that shows similarities among the photos? If you could walk down the halls of the school attended by these students, which of the above would you expect to see socializing together? Why?



Thinking about Stargirl:

It's easy as an adult reader to sit in judgment of Leo's (and the rest of the school's) intolerant attitudes in Stargirl. But think about the judgments you made when looking at the pictures above. What kinds of assumptions were you required to make? Are they much different than those made by Leo and his classmates at Mica High?
