Have you ever had trouble with a reading assignment? Maybe the assigned reading was really difficult, and you were so frustrated that you couldn't finish it. Maybe it was just so boring that you couldn't get through the entire text. Or, maybe you did read the assignment, but when you were finished you didn't remember much about it. If it was literature, maybe you couldn't relate to any of the characters, or there were too many people and events to follow. Or maybe you read the book and thought about it, but when you discussed it in class your teacher talked about things that you never even thought of. If any of these sound familiar to you, then you'll find here some ideas about how to become more effective when you have to read and comprehend text.

You'll find links in the table to the left that will take you to pages that discuss what to do before you read, while you read, and after you read to improve your comprehension. There are also sections that talk about how to read hard texts, boring texts, and literature. In each of these sections, the ideas come from two sources. First, they come from personal experiences as readers, both our own experiences and those of other good readers who have shared with us. Second, they come from research that has been published about effective reading techniques.

To the right, you'll find links to some information about us, including links to our class's "blogs" (that's short for "web logs"). In our blogs, we've been writing about what we think about when we read things.
