Introduction

This report is an update of the 1995 and 1996 report on Intermittent Streams as Rearing Habitat for Sacramento River Chinook Salmon. In 1996-97 we expanded our study of non-natal chinook rearing in small and intermittent Sacramento River tributaries to include streams from Chico to Keswick Dam. There were four main objectives :

  1. to determine which intermittent tributaries of the Sacramento River might be important for nonnatal rearing.
  2. to provide preliminary data on the density and condition of juveniles rearing in tributaries.
  3. to determine the spatial and temporal extent of nonnatal rearing in each tributary.
  4. to evaluate habitat quality and restoration needs of tributaries used for rearing.
