This module contains the basic Internet and research skills and concepts that are important to learn before students will be able to successfully master the health-related research we will cover later. This module also contains an overview of the course and additional information. Performance Objectives 1. Understanding basic Internet terms such as search engines, subject trees, browsers, URL's, hyperlinks, e-mail, etc. 2. Do a simple Internet search. 3. Identify and click on hyperlinks. Activities 1. Send in a biography of yourself. Please use your e-mail program to compose a short (50-300) word introduction of yourself. Include information about your occupation, education and why you are intererested in learning how to conduct health research on the Internet. When I teach, I like to know a little bit about each student in the class so that I can tailor the class to their interests, background, and skills. Send the information to me at: ricksheridan57@yahoo.com 2. Learn basic Internet terms. Please go to the Course Materials section and read the list of Internet terms. Refer back to this list occasionally as you learn other Internet skills. 3. Do-it-yourself tutorials. If you are new to the Internet there are some excellent tutorials at the addresses below. Please go to them and work through the basics (this is optional if you are already experienced with the Internet): Beginners' Central- teach yourself Internet skills Learn the Net- more learning resources Howstuffworks.com- general tutorials on computers The Complete Internet Guide and Web Tutorial Becoming WebWise- free Internet training The Newbie Club- learn more about your PC 4. Do a simple Internet search. Click on the Search button at the top of your browser. In the search box that comes up, type in a health-related term such as diabetes. Click on the hyperlink (blue underlined text) of the first search result. After you explore that site, click on the Back button on your browser and try one of the other search results. 5. Begin working on your 600-1,200 word essay. Start recording notes of any new ideas, concepts or attitudes you may be having about health research on the Internet. Begin thinking about any personal or professional use that you will have for Internet healthcare research. Eventually I will ask you to work on several of the case studies in the Materials section to help apply some of the Internet healthcare research skills that we will learn throughout this course.
