This index was created to assist in locating detailed geologic maps of Utah that are distributed among the map and monographic series published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Utah Geological Survey (UGS). It correlates the geologic maps to the USGS 7.5 and 15 minute quadrangles. By finding the quadrangle name in the index, one can easily determine the existence of geologic maps covering part or all of the quadrangle. Only maps having scales of 2 miles to the inch or approx. 1:125,000 and larger are included in the index.

The index is alphabetical by quadrangle name. Information provided for each quadrangle includes: the scale rounded off to the nearest thousand, the best fit description of area in quadrangle mapped (coverage), subject if other than general geology, and the source, i.e. the abbreviated USGS or UGS series name. "See" references to 7.5 minute quadrangles are provided from 15 minute quadrangle names and obsolete 7.5 minute quadrangle names.

If you do not know the quadrangle name(s) for your area of interest, find it by using this link to the Utah index to topographic and other map coverage. Another version of it is published and freely distributed by the USGS at:

The quadrangle name can also be determined through the internet using the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) at: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form. Simply search a feature name in the GNIS and it will provide the 7.5 minute quadrangle name.
