Resources on
the Holocaust in Meriam Library
REFERENCE SOURCES. These three useful starting points are
located on the second floor of the
Meriam
Library in the Reference Collection.
- Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (Reference D804.3 E53 1990) This
thorough, four volume set contains hundreds of short entries about
the causes, people, places, events, and results of the Holocaust.
It also includes many historic photographs, cartoons, and maps.
- Bibliography on Holocaust Literature (Reference D810 J4 E34
1986) Lists over 9000 books, articles, and other source materials.
Covers Jewish life in prewar Europe, antisemitism, the rise of
Fascism, World War II, concentration camps, the resistance, and
the aftermath and effects of the Holocaust.
- The Holocaust: an Anotated Bibliography and Resource Guide
(Reference D810 J4 H65 1985) Contains fewer but longer entries and
a wider variety of forms and subjects including audiovisual
materials, music, traveling exhibits, oral history, speakers, and
organizations. It also covers how to teach about the Holocaust and
presents a high school level curriculum.

- For a fairly complete list of over 300 books and other
resources owned by Meriam Library with the most recent items
listed first, select "All Categories", enter the words "Holocaust
Jewish", press enter, and press "F" for find.
- For a detailed listing of subtopics regarding the Holocaust,
select "Subject, enter the words "Holocaust Jewish", press enter,
and press "s" for scan. Topics are subdivided and listed
alphabetically, for example "--Biography", "--Causes", "--Moral
and religious aspects", etc.
- Related subjects to search include "World War,
1939-1945--Jews", "Jewish Question", and "Antisemitism".
BROWSING THE SHELVES.
- In the Main Collection on the third floor see call numbers
D804.3, D810 J4, and DS141. In Government Publications on the
fourth floor see call number Y 3.H. For books for children and
young adults see call number 940.53 in the Juvenile Collection on
the fourth floor.
VIDEOS:
- To find videotape documentaries on this subject select "All
Categories" in the online catalog, enter the search "Holocaust
Jewish and f=med", and press "f" to find. They are located in
Limited Loan on the first floor of the library.
ART.
- Maus and Maus II, Pulitzer Prize winning comic books
based on the experiences of cartoonist Art Spiegelman's father are
highly recommended for all teens and adults. They can be found in
the Main Collection under call number D804.3 S66.
- Judy Chicago's Holocaust Project includes not only
color plates of the art from this famous exhibition, but a great
deal of background information, many historic photographs and
drawings, a bibliography, and a filmography. It is in the Folio
Collection on the Third Floor under call number N6537 C48 A4 1993.
AUTHORS
- ELIE WIESEL, a Holocaust survivor, is probably the world's
foremost authority on the subject and a superb author. His books
are located in the Main collection on the third floor. His fiction
and biographical or critical works about him are classified PQ2683
I32.
- ANNE FRANK, a teenage Holocaust victim has inspired
generations of readers through her famous Diary of a Young
Girl and her related book, Tales from the Secret Annex.
Copies of her Diary can be found in the Main Collection under call
number D810 J4 F15, with another copy in the Juvenile Collection
under call number 92 F828f.
- Two spoken versions of the Diary on cassette are located in
Limited Loan on the first floor under the call numbers:
