About the course

The objective of this course is to explore: the basic theories in communication and information flow; the nature, process and effects of human communication behavior; innovation, and change; and language and the symbolic basis for communication; rhetorical, intrapersonal, nonverbal, interpersonal, organizational, intercultural and mass communication contexts.

This is an introductory survey course with a focus on human communication: on the interactions people have with each other. In COMM 001 you were exposed to mass media systems, communication technology and the institutions of communication, in this course we will explore systems which run from intrapersonal to interpersonal to rhetorical to organizational to intercultural to global communication.

During the course we shall examine how language and symbols impact our daily lives as communicators. The concern with how we create realities with words and images will make up a significant part of our discussions. We will explore modern communication theory and research and see its ancient beginnings.
