Writing Requirement: You need to complete three book reviews that are five to eight pages each. They must be produced with a word processor. You may choose from the list of books below or you may select another book with my approval. Books of exceptional length, or difficulty, will count as two. Each review should include: (1) a summary of the work; (2) an evaluation; and (3) a description of the relationship of the book to the discipline and to your experience. Two copies of each report must be submitted. One copy will be placed on reserve for peer evaluation and then retained for department files.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of WEST and Econ 2 & 3.
Policies Regarding Adds and Drops: Students may drop for any reason during the first 2 weeks of class. After that you need a documented "serious and compelling" reason. You may add if space permits during the first 2 weeks of class. During the third and fourth week, you will need to receive my permission to add. Students cannot add after the fourth week of class. The state will not pay the University for your share of the cost nor will the department receive any credit for your participation if you add after the fourth week.
Policy Regarding Disabled Students: Disabled students are encouraged to meet with me during the first week of class to jointly determine how their specific needs can be best accommodated.
Consultation with the instructor is encouraged throughout the semester. Classes will meet in Butte 601, the Economics Department Conference Room. If you cannot attend a scheduled class meeting, please let me know before class.
First class meeting: (5-6 p.m., Tuesday, 2/3/98) You need to write a proposal that lists the books you plan to read and your goals for the class.
Second class meeting: (5-6 p.m.,Tuesday, 3/3/98) You will evaluate each other’s work in progress. You will also present oral summaries of your progress and your evaluations of the material you have read during the first half of the semester. Your first book review is due.
Third class meeting: (5-6 p.m., Tuesday, 4/7/98) You need to write evaluations of course activities in which you stress the relationship of your chosen literature to the discipline and to your course of study. Your second book review is due.
Fourth class meeting: (5-6 p.m., Tuesday, 5/5/98) Your third book review is due.
Grades: I will grade your book reviews and your in-class assignments. Book reviews will be due the first Tuesday of each month as noted above. Late work will be penalized at the rate of 4% per weekday up to a maximum of 40%. Any incomplete papers must be completed by 5 p.m. Tuesday, 5/19/98.
I will ask each of you to select a 4 digit code, and I will post your grades with the code on a web page immediately after grading each assignment.
At the end of the semester I will take the average of your scores and apply the following scale (in percent) to determine your grade for the course:
