You have the opportunity to go on a web scavenger hunt. In a scavenger
hunt, you are usually asked to go around the neighborhood and visit homes
to ask for specific items. This hunt is no different, except that the
items requested are information. One additional requirement is that you
must record the addresses (URL's) of the homes (pages) you have visited,
as well as the specific items requested.
1. Go the University's main page, click on the library, and select Academic
Universe. This will allow you to access part of the information
available on Lexis-Nexis. Find a story about DNA research involving
Thomas Jefferson, our third president. Briefly summarize that story, and
send me the web address where you found that information. Next, go to the
Whitehouse's web site and search for information on Thomas Jefferson.
Send me a brief summary of his accomplishments, and send me the web
address where you found this information.
2. Visit the Census Bureau. Who is the Director of the Census Bureau?
Then go to Latest News and checkout the information on the elderly
population (Social and Demographic Topics). What was the median age of
the Nation's population in 1994? By year 2050 what proportion of the
American population will be classified as "elderly"? Which state has the
largest number of elderly, and which state has the highest percentage?
Whom can you contact for additional information on elderly population?
3. Your boss is concerned about the potential impact of Federal
Regulations upon her business which is making cellophane wrappers for
playing cards. She is concerned because cellophane contains formaldehyde
which is considered by some to be a cancer causing agent. You volunteer to
use your Internet expertise to research government regulations on
formaldehyde. Visit the home page of the Code of Federal Regulations and
search for regulations on formaldehyde. Bring back the citation(s) for the
regulation affecting your bosses' business.
