Study questions for Weeks One and Two: Socrates, “The Apology”

 

1.  In the Apology, Socrates is on trial.  What has he been accused of?

 

2.  During his defense in the Apology, Socrates challenges and interrogates Meletus, one of his accusers.  What is Socrates’ primary complaint against Meletus, and how does it relate to the overall themes of the Apology?

 

3. According to Socrates, should we fear death?  Why or why not?

 

4.  According to Socrates, a bad person cannot harm a good person.  Where does he say this?  Why does he think that it is true?

 

5. Do you think Socrates was unhappy with the outcome of the trial?  Did he try as hard as he could have to obtain a ‘not guilty’ verdict?  Explain.
