Wildcat Mascot

The wildcat has been the Chico State mascot for over 100 years and was adopted by the student body because, according to recollections of those who were around at the time, it typified the kind of sassy, spitfire vigor and vitality the students wanted to project. Our friend, Willie the Wildcat, was introduced as the mascot in the early 2000s.

Mascot Usage Guidelines

Because Willie the Wildcat is a part of our visual brand, we need to follow a consistent protocol for all depictions:

  • All images of Willie used in marketing materials must be a photo taken by University Photographers or must be an official illustration provided by University Communications (UCOMM). Creation of new illustrations, especially using AI, is prohibited. The University has a large photo library—please contact the University Photographer at jahalley@csuchico.edu.
  • Photos of our mascot in uniforms, themed accessories, etc. for custom photographs are not permitted.
  • Sale or distribution of any promotional material or merchandise related to the Mascot appearance without the express, written consent of the University is prohibited. Read more on Licensing Agreements.

Campus organizations may request Willie for school spirit-raising and photo ops.

Illustrated Mascot Artwork

If you need an illustration of Willie for your marketing materials, please submit a ticket and UCOMM will supply an appropriate artwork file. Approval of use is on a case-by-case basis.
