Community Agreements

Chico State is establishing Community Agreements to create a place where we all want to study, live, and work, a place where everyone belongs and thrives. The process to create these agreements took more than a year and involved the entire campus community.

Promoting Respect, Empathy, and Integrity

At Chico State, we are committed to fostering a culture of belonging, excellence, and personal responsibility by prioritizing equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of campus life.

To achieve this, we encourage every member of the Chico State community to cultivate positive relationships consciously and voluntarily with themselves and others. Such efforts require a lifestyle of accountability that starts with self-reflection, self-awareness, and self-control, and extends to personal and communal responsibility.

As a community, we are committed to engaging in actions that promote kindness and consideration while striving to avoid behaviors that intentionally cause harm or distress to those around us. We are committed to continuous improvement and innovation in all our work endeavors because we understand the impact they have on our community. These values are reflected in the Community Agreements, which were finalized on October 9, 2024.

The Process

Chico State formed an Implementation Team in late spring 2023 to facilitate campus changes recommended by the Cozen O’Connor audit of all CSUs. A subcommittee of the team, the Other Conduct of Concern subcommittee, was tasked with developing a Statement of Conduct to address unprofessional conduct, microagressions, acts of intolerance, disruptive behavior, free speech, academic freedom, and professionalism.

At President Perez's recommendation, the subcommittee shifted from developing the Statement of Conduct to creating Community Agreements. The subcommittee developed a draft and more than 300 Chico State community members (students, faculty, and staff) provided feedback. The Community Agreements were revealed at the President's Town Hall in fall 2024. In spring 2025, President Perez is requesting university endorsement of Community Agreements and is scheduled to meet with several university stakeholder groups. Groups scheduled are:

  • Associated Students Government Affairs Committee
  • Student Athletic Advisory Council
