January 13, 2025 - Support for Students Affected by Wildfires
Dear Campus Community,
The following message was sent to students earlier today. Please share these resources with any student you hear may need them. Also know that emotional support is available for our faculty and staff 24/7 through the Employee Assistance Program by calling 1-800-357-7474 — company code: csuchico. Thank you for taking care of one another and our students as our state faces yet another devastating natural disaster.
Thank you,
Steve Perez

Dear Students,
Like many from across the state and around the world, we are deeply saddened by the devastating wildfires burning in Southern California. The images and videos we are seeing online are emotionally jarring, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by the crisis.;
Though Chico is hundreds of miles away, the impact of these fires is felt within our community. About 20 percent of our students come from Southern California, and many students and employees have family members, loved ones, or friends in the affected areas. And for some individuals, the fire brings up emotions from other wildfires that have impacted communities here and elsewhere in California in recent years. The situation is weighing heavily on everyone. It is important to be kind to ourselves and understanding with our peers and colleagues.
With the spring semester starting next week, we want to remind all our students the University is here to support you. Students who have been directly impacted by evacuations or have sustained losses from these fires should contact the CARE Team, which can connect you with staff and resources to address the impacts. Basic Needs also has emergency grants available for those facing unexpected financial challenges.
Any student who is facing travel issues because of the fires should reach out to their professors. Student employees should reach out to their supervisors. Our faculty and staff are committed to being flexible and understanding.;
Any student who needs emotional support should reach out to the WellCat Counseling Center, which has 24/7 counseling available.;
I'll be thinking about all of you throughout the week. Please prioritize your safety and well-being and know that we are here for you and look forward to welcoming you back.
Thank you,
Steve Perez
