November 7, 2024 – Remembering the Camp Fire

Dear Campus Community,

Tomorrow, November 8, we solemnly mark the sixth anniversary of the Camp Fire. For many, the memory of that tragic day feels like yesterday. For others, it may feel distant, given how much has happened in the years that followed. And for some, it may bring back experiences from additional devastating wildfires that our North State communities have endured in recent years.

In honor of this moment in our history, the Trinity Hall bells will chime in remembrance tomorrow at 11:08 a.m., and then again 85 seconds later. Instead of an official gathering as we have done in the past, I encourage each individual to take some time, listen to the chimes, and reflect in a way that feels most appropriate.

Please be kind and patient with one another. If you or someone you know needs emotional support, please reach out to our dedicated campus resources. The Employee Assistance Program is available to staff, and students can find 24/7 counseling at the WellCat Counseling Center.

As we consider the impact of fire on the North State, a photo shared with me just days after the Park Fire comes to mind. Director Eli Goodsell's photo showed a tender stalk of milkweed pushing upward through the ashes on our Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. As Eli said, “These fires continue to test us, but through each and every one, I'm moved by the outpouring of community kindness and compassion, and the resilience and strength we find together.”

Our community will never forget the Camp Fire, its aftermath, and the courageous resilience that followed. With the Camp Fire and other wildfires, we continue to demonstrate our sense of community and hope for the future.

Thank you,
Steve Perez
