September 25, 2024 - Town Hall to Highlight Strengths and Improvement Opportunities for Employee Experience

Dear Campus Community,

I hope you will join me at a Town Hall meeting on October 1 where we will discuss the results of the Great Colleges to Work For employee engagement survey and our plans for next steps. You may recall that Chico State conducted the survey in spring to establish a baseline and better understand the day-to-day experience of our faculty and staff. The data provides rich details as to how employees experience Chico State and can be used to compare progress with a group of institutions recognized for also striving to create thriving workplaces.

The survey results have been shared with vice presidents and senior leadership on campus. An Employee Engagement Core Team has been established and is making great progress analyzing and planning actions. I invite you to join the conversation at the Town Hall from 10–11:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 1, in Colusa 100 A/B. At the event, all faculty and staff will have an opportunity to learn where our strengths are and where we need to invest more time and attention.

Strengths for Chico State were identified in the survey as:

  • Most of us find work meaningful and we feel a connection to the University’s mission.
  • University support for well-being of staff and faculty, and satisfaction with benefits.
  • Effectiveness of supervisors and department chairs.

Areas where attention should be focused on improvements are:

  • Building confidence in senior leadership.
  • Addressing feelings that we are constrained by limited resources.
  • Creating opportunities for personal professional development.
  • Improving performance management practices.
  • Enhancing communication and collaboration.

We will explore these responses and more at the Town Hall. I will also share the five areas where we will focus our efforts to make improvements in the coming academic year. I hope you will join me in a conversation that will set Chico State on a path to an even stronger future.

Thank you,
Steve Perez
