June 11, 2026 - Thank You for Making Chico State a Wonderful Place

Dear campus community,

This week, I had the opportunity to do something incredible — Chico State hosted California State University Chancellor Mildred García, almost all of my CSU president counterparts and many of their partners, and the executive leadership team of the Chancellor’s Office for a three-day retreat and strategic planning session.

This gathering would not have been possible without the incredible efforts of so many at Chico State. I want to thank the President’s Office team for its months of planning and preparations, Facilities Management and Services for ensuring our grounds looked their very best, University Police Department for its support, Division of IT for its tech logistics, Associated Students Dining for a jaw-dropping farm-to-table dinner, and the University Farm, Janet Turner Print Museum, and The Well for providing memorable experiences that showed a sampling of what makes Chico State unique. There were countless others behind the scenes who helped make the visit a success and jumped in for last-minute support, and I am grateful for every contribution.

What I heard over and over throughout the week was how much Chancellor García and the presidents loved Chico State. They were captivated by our beautiful campus, our vibrant and walkable downtown, our deep connections to the community, our inspiring alumni, and the warmth and hospitality of the people who call this place home. One president told me that Chico State is “what we are all working to create.”

None of this happened because we hosted a special event. It happened because they experienced who we are every day. For three days, our guests saw and felt what generations of students, employees, and community members have known all along, and what I learned the first moment I arrived — that Chico State is a truly special place. They saw a University deeply connected to its region, committed to student success, and filled with people who care about one another and are proud of the work we do together.

It was the honor of a lifetime to show off and share this University with my colleagues from across the CSU and showcase what is possible when an institution lives up to its values. Tanya and I have never been more proud to be part of Chico State. Thank you for making this University the remarkable place it is.
