June 23, 2026 - Gun Violence in our Community

Dear Campus Community,

Like many of you, I was deeply shaken by the tragic act of gun violence at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library that claimed the lives of two individuals last night.

Unfortunately, we are used to reading about these types of mass shootings in the news, but it is deeply unsettling for it to occur in our own community. These acts have no place in our community, in our society, or in our world, and we extend our condolences to all who have been affected by this horrific event.

We are also grateful for the swift response of law enforcement, emergency personnel, and others who acted to protect the community during this tragic incident, including our own University Police Department.

When gun violence happens within our own community and at a place so many associate with safety and learning, it takes a toll on our sense of safety and well-being. Please reach out and connect with your classmates, friends, and colleagues, and let us continue to show one another the values that define Chico State.

As we are all processing this, it’s natural to wonder, “What would I do in such a situation?” While difficult to watch, I encourage everyone to review the CSU’s Active Shooter Safety Training. The training video outlines the "Run, Hide, Fight" survival method to be used in the case of an active shooter situation. With input from campus police chiefs across the system, it was produced to help prepare students, faculty, staff, and community members for the potential threat of an active shooter. While its guidance is knowledge I hope none of us ever have to tap into, this week’s events are a sobering reminder that such abhorrent acts can take place anytime, anywhere.

We are better together, and we all play a role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our campus community. Any concerns about disruptive, threatening, or concerning behavior should be reported via Maxient, and needs for immediate assistance should always be reported to the University Police Department. All reports of harassment and any threats or physical violence will be investigated immediately.

Particularly in moments like this, I am reminded of the care, compassion, and strength of our campus community. We will continue to support one another and remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all.
