September 12, 2025 – Support for our Community in the Wake of a Challenging Week

Dear Campus Community,

We know the assassination of Charlie Kirk earlier this week at Utah Valley University, and the conversations, debate, and graphic imagery that have followed, may be upsetting or overwhelming to some members of our campus community, no matter their political views. Our deepest condolences are with Mr. Kirk’s family during this difficult time.

We strongly condemn violence in any form, and political disagreements must never be used as a justification to harm others. Respect for differing viewpoints and a commitment to civil discourse are essential on college campuses.

At universities like ours, where upholding free speech is a core value, we must continue to support free expression (even of those who may have unpopular viewpoints) in a content-neutral manner and do so in a way that prioritizes the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

If you are struggling or simply need someone to talk to, please remember the University offers free and confidential support services. Students can access mental health services via the WellCat Counseling Center. You can call 530-898-6345 and press option 2 to access 24/7 counseling or visit a Let’s Chat drop-in session. Faculty and staff can access 24/7 counseling and other services at www.mylifematters.com

Thank You,
Steve Perez
