If you’ve been placed on Academic Notice, disqualified, or need reinstatement information, this page explains what it means and your next steps.
A university status that occurs when your GPA falls below minimum academic standards. At Chico State, this means having below a 2.0 GPA in either your Cumulative or Chico GPA. Being placed on Academic Notice is a signal—not a punishment. It means the university wants to support your academic success and help return you to good standing.
At the end of each semester, the university sends a personalized email outlining your next steps. These steps are varied and depend on several nuanced factors. Please refer to that institutional communication for more information or reach out to our office at (530) 898-5712 for more information.
You're not alone. Chico State offers several resources to help you succeed:
It depends on the type of hold placed on your account:
Check your student portal and refer to the email sent by the university for specifics. When in doubt, contact our office at 530-898-5712.
Not necessarily. While Academic Notice makes a student eligible for Academic Disqualification, it doesn’t guarantee it will happen. To protect your academic standing and avoid disqualification, it’s important to meet with your advisor as soon as possible to create a success plan.
If continuing school right now doesn’t feel like the best choice, you may be eligible to take a Leave of Absence. This gives you time to refocus without risking further academic standing. Talk with an advisor to discuss whether a leave is right for you and how to return in good standing when you're ready.
We're here to support you with Drop-In Advising in-person and online.
As an undergraduate student on academic notice, you may be subject to academic disqualification based on your GPA and class level. If disqualified, you will not be allowed to attend the University for at least one year. You are not eligible to take courses at Chico State through regular enrollment while academically disqualified.
Here are the minimum GPA requirements by class level to avoid entering disqualification range:
Important Note: Your class level is based on the total (cumulative) number of units you have completed.
The only way to improve your Chico GPA while disqualified is by taking courses through Open University.
As a disqualified student you must get the courses you plan to take through Open University approved by an advisor in Academic Advising Programs. In order to avoid long wait times in the first weeks of school, we recommend you seek initial approval prior to the first week of the semester.
Disqualified students are eligible for admission and enrollment one academic year (two complete semesters) following their disqualification.
Your appeal will be reviewed by the academic status committee for your intended major. Committee members look for clear evidence that you have resolved the problems which led to your academic difficulty.
**Please note that the dates and deadlines differ for each step**
