Application Guide

Applicants must list three (and only three) references in the Recommendations section of the Cal State Apply application. Once submitted, Cal State Apply will automatically email each reference a link to complete their recommendation form.

Tips for Applicants:

  • Let your references know to expect the automated email (check spam/junk folders).
  • Monitor your application; statuses change from “requested” to “completed” when forms are submitted.

Review the Sample Recommendation Form.

The Personal Statement is a critical component to the MSW Program application. The purpose of the Personal Statement is to allow us to learn about you, from you. This is your space to share your interest in Social Work, understanding of Social Work values, and academic and personal goals, as well as show us your writing skills. Each prompt should have a written response that is approximately one page in length. Please use headings (for each prompt), doubled-spacing, and a 12-point font.
The Personal Statement document will be uploaded into your Cal State Apply application.

Review the MSW Personal Reflection Guide for guidance.

Prompts for All Applicants

1. Share your reason for pursuing a graduate degree in social work. How will an MSW help you to advance personally and professionally?

2. Share your understanding of your own power/privilege. How has this informed your interaction with people whose lives, worldviews, beliefs, and/or values are different from your own (e.g., culture, race/ethnicity, ability, class, religion, sexuality, gender identity, politics, education).

3. Share how your own experiences of hardship, marginalization, and/or oppression influenced the person you are today. How will you incorporate what you have learned into your practice as a social worker?

4. Share your understanding/definition of social justice. What do you believe is the role of social work in addressing social justice? As a graduate-level Social Worker, what role do you anticipate (or see yourself playing) in promoting social justice, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable populations.

5. Please use this space to share what you would like us to know, that may not have been shared in your responses to the prior prompts/questions.  PLEASE ENSURE YOU RESPOND TO THIS REQUIRED PROMPT.

Situation-Specific Prompts for Some Applicants

The following prompts only apply to certain applicants. You must respond if the situation applies to you (e.g., GPA below 3.0, interest in the Distributed Learning Program, or if you are applying for the 1-Year Program without a practicum liaison reference). If a situation applies to you and you do not respond to the corresponding prompt, your application will be incomplete and will not be reviewed. If none of these apply, you may skip them.

Prompt only for applicants with a cumulative GPA lower than 3.0 ONLY:

If your GPA is below 3.0, please share why you feel it is not reflective of your ability to succeed in graduate school.

Prompt only for Distributed Learning (DL) applicants:

If you are applying to the Distributed Learning (DL) program, please share how the DL option is a good fit for your educational goals and emphasize your commitment to the north state after graduation.

Prompt only for MSW One-Year and MSW One-Year Distributed Learning (DL) applicants who are unable to secure a Practicum Liaison reference:

Please share detailed information on why you are not including a Practicum Liaison (or Director of Practicum Education) reference with your application. Ensure you are sharing the diligent efforts you have made to attempt to secure a Practicum Liaison reference.

Applicants must upload a current resumé into their Cal State Apply application. The resumé is required. It should provide a clear overview of your professional, volunteer, internship, and service experiences, as well as education, training, and skills that support your application to the MSW program. While human and social services experience is especially relevant, we also value other types of work and service that demonstrate your skills, commitment, or preparation for graduate study.

Resumé should:

  • Include all relevant experiences, not only those in human services. We want to understand the full range of your work, volunteer, leadership, and service background
  • Highlight responsibilities, accomplishments, and skills that demonstrate your readiness for graduate-level social work study.
  • List education, certifications, specialized training, and specialized skills (such as language).
  • Format should be professional, organized, clear, and concise (no more than 2–3 pages is recommended).
  • Include the information provided on this Sample Resumé Outline for MSW Applicants.

No. References must submit their forms through the Cal State Apply system using the link they receive by email.

My reference didn’t receive the email link, so what should I do?

If you are not admitted, you may appeal the decision through the Office of Graduate Studies or reapply next year. Thesis
A thesis is a scholarly research study that contributes to social work knowledge and prepares students for research or academic roles. Students design and carry out an original study under faculty guidance, complete a thesis, and formally defend it. The process typically spans two semesters and may require IRB approval if human subjects are involved.

  • Must follow university formatting and submission requirements
  • Must be completed within five years of starting the MSW (extensions possible via GRST 899)
  • Requires forming a faculty committee (Chair + one member minimally)
  • Review the MSW Thesis/Project Student Guide (Google Doc) for guidance

Research Project
A research project allows students to apply professional skills by creating a practice-focused product—such as a handbook, curriculum, intervention, or training—grounded in research. Students work with a faculty committee to develop a written document, produce the project, and present an oral defense. Projects typically take two semesters and may require IRB approval.

  • Must include a written document, professional product, and oral defense
  • Must be completed within five years of starting the MSW (extensions possible via GRST 899
  • Requires forming a faculty committee (Chair + one member minimally)
  • Review the MSW Thesis/Project Student Guide (Google Doc) for guidance

Comprehensive Case Review
The comprehensive case review integrates coursework and practicum experience by analyzing a real case from the student’s concentration-year placement. Students may complete a written paper or oral presentation demonstrating advanced generalist practice, critical thinking, and application of theory. Workshops support preparation, and the review is completed in the final semester.

  • Case must come from the concentration-year practicum
  • Students have one opportunity to revise/resubmit if needed
  • Requires completion of two additional electives
  • Review the MSW Comprehensive Case Review Student Guide (Google Doc) for guidance
