We will be offering free financial planning information to any Butte community members in the areas of budgeting, credit scores, student loan repayment, retirement planning, and many other areas of personal finance. If you are struggling with financial stress and need someone to talk to, anyone on campus is welcome to sit down with our resident financial planner or our paraplanners to discuss options and formulate a financial plan. For more information, please email financialwellness@csuchico.edu.
Whether you visit us in person or via Zoom meeting, you’ll be assigned a peer paraplanner. Our paraplanners are senior finance students who have been specially trained to help people with their financial needs. Your assigned paraplanner will ask you some questions about your financial goals and concerns, and will work with you to develop a plan to meet those goals and address your concerns.
We often meet with people who are having a hard time with their finances. You don't need to be embarrassed or ashamed if you are experiencing high levels of debt, a low income, or having a hard time finding food or shelter. Our team will help you create a plan and identify some steps you can take to improve your financial life.
Common concerns that students discuss with us include:
Campus and community workshops include presentations on improving credit, managing financial aid, saving for retirement, and many other topics. We are able to prepare a custom workshop or we have a number of pre-made workshops and presentations to choose from as well. Please allow up to 48 working hours for a response to your form submission.
If you dream of helping people achieve their goals. If you want to learn to advise people on building wealth. If you love combining soft and hard skills to solve challenging problems, then this is the role for you!
A Paraplanner is someone who works with a financial planner to help provide information and financial planning services to clients. Similar to a paralegal who works with a lawyer, a paraplanner works with a financial planner.
Our role is designed for a Chico State student who is looking for an opportunity to learn more about financial planning or pursuing a financial planning career after graduation.
Paraplanners must be enrolled in FINA 454 or have already completed FINA 454 when they begin working. We call this a Co-Requisite. FINA 454 is our upper division financial planning course.
Our Para-Planners meet with clients to review and create financial plans, provide financial information related to budgets, debts, credit, and many other personal finance topics including referrals to other on campus services such as Basic Needs, VITA or CLIC. If hired, candidates will be trained in how to provide this information.
Students who work on campus are limited to 20 hours a week by university policy. We can often accommodate a full 20 hour work week for students, but specific hours are dependent on the amount of work available.
The university has a pay scale for student employees.
Students aren't always comfortable talking about financial topics, especially if they've never experienced the issue themselves.
We hold an in-depth training session near the end of summer break, and more sessions throughout the semester to help you understand financial planning topics.
Our paraplanners are taught to follow the CFP® 7 Step Financial Planning Process.
Email financialwellness@csuchico.edu with your resume. Please use the subject line "Paraplanner application."
We expand access to trustworthy, pro-bono financial planning for underserved households throughout California, delivered by trained students under CFP® professional supervision, while developing the next generation of client-ready financial planners.
The Financial Wellness Clinic is supported in part by generous grants from The Evelyn & Walter Haas Jr. Fund and The Foundation for Financial Planning.
