APE Added Authorization

Currently there is a high demand for Adapted Physical Education (APE) specialists in the public schools of California. Students who choose the APE Added Authorization (APEAA) have excellent marketability because of the identified need for inclusion of students with disabilities in the general physical education curriculum.
The APEAA coursework is grounded in theory, current research, and practice, and requires students have a strong foundation in physiology, physical education curriculum, biomechanics, motor development and learning, and assessment.
Grant Opportunity
We currently have a competitive grant program called the ADAPTED Training Grant to financially support students seeking APE authorization in either program. Interested students are encouraged to learn more and apply.
Two In-Person Options
The Chico State Kinesiology Department has two in-person options for completing the APEAA.
Traditional Program
The traditional program is open to undergraduate and graduate students and requires completion of coursework during the fall and spring semesters. In addition to completing the APEAA coursework (as an undergraduate or graduate student), all students must demonstrate subject matter competency by earning an undergraduate degree in physical education teacher education or passing the CSET. Students will also complete the credential program for physical education.
Summer Program
The summer program is open to individuals who currently have one of the following teaching credentials: single subject physical education, multiple subject credential, or education specialist credential. Students in this program will complete required course over two summers and a semester of student teaching (KINE 617).
