There are two student organizations affiliated with the History Department at CSU, Chico. The History Club is open to all who wish to join, whether they are history majors or not. Phi Alpha Theta is the local chapter of a national history honor society. Phi Alpha Theta members edit and produce The Chico Historian, a journal that publishes students' historical research papers written in conjunction with coursework taken at CSU, Chico.

Phi Alpha Theta and the History Club offer students the opportunity to become involved with history beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, these groups host book talks, a careers forum, trivia nights, trips, and movie screenings that always open up new discussions on the subject of history.

Each semester the club takes one or two trips to historical sights of interest. Past trips have included touring the New Clairvaux Monastery in Vina, Sutter’s Fort, the Emigrant Museum and Donner Summit, and San Francisco’s famous Chinatown and Russian District. As a member of Phi Alpha Theta you will be eligible to participate in a yearly regional conference where students can present original work and research and compete for awards against other history students across northern California. Chico State hosted the Northern California Regional Conference of Phi Alpha Theta in April 2014.

Membership in Phi Alpha Theta and/or the History Club is most importantly a great way to demonstrate your commitment to history and an opportunity to engage other historians dedicated to the study of the past. We welcome anyone who is eager to discuss, learn, absorb and contribute to the ongoing study of history!
