Area 2 Placement and ALEKS PPL

Learn how Chico State determines your placement for General Education Area 2, what to take to complete Math for My Major, and if you should assess with ALEKS PPL. Completing your Area 2 course in your First Year sets a strong foundation for your degree.

Overview

Frequently Asked Questions

This Math/Quantitative Reasoning (Area 2) message is informational only. It does not block registration. It tells you your current placement category and helps you decide which General Education Area 2 course to start with based on your major. Depending on your placement, you may need a support course or may want to take the ALEKS PPL to try to place higher.

At Chico State, ALEKS PPL is primarily used to determine readiness for calculus-based courses. However, you can also use ALEKS PPL to demonstrate readiness for a higher-level course and boost your placement category.

ALEKS PPL helps:

  • Helps identify your current math strengths and areas that may need review
  • Gives you the opportunity refresh concepts, learn new ideas, and practice what you may not have seen in a while
  • Provides an initial unproctored score (1–100) to see where you are and if is aligns with the Area 2 course in your major

You don’t have to guess. There are three main places to review:

  • Your Student Center message:
    •  If you see "Area 2 Fulfilled," you have completed your GE Area 2 course. However, if you are pursuing a STEM major and have not taken courses towards calculus, you are strongly advised to complete an ALEKS PPL assessment to determine if you are ready for MATH 119 Precalculus, MATH 120 Anayltic Geomtry and Calculus or if you should start with MATH 118 Trigonometry as the default MATH course without an ALEKS PPL assessment score.
    • If you see “Area 2 Ready," and are pursuing a STEM major that requires calculus, you are strongly advised to complete an ALEKS PPL assessment to determine if you are ready for MATH 119 Precalculus, MATH 120 Anayltic Geomtry and Calculus or if you should start with MATH 118 Trigonometry as the default MATH course without an ALEKS PPL assessment score.
    • If you see “Area 2 Ready with Support,” and believe this does not accurately reflect your abilities, you should complete an ALEKS PPL assessment to try to boost your placement level to Area 2 Ready and not need a support lab.
    • If you see “Area 2-Conditional," and you do not want to wait for the final review of your placement criteria, you can expedite the placement process with ALEKS PPL.

  •  The Math for My Major page
    • This page explains the Area 2 course that is required or recommended for your declared or intended major. If your placement level (as reflected in your Student Center) does not have you starting in the course required for your major, you are encouraged to complete an ALEKS PPL assessment.
    • If your major requires a calculus-based course (MATH 119 Precalculus or MATH 120 Analytical Geometry and Calculus) you should plan to complete ALEKS PPL.

  • Your major’s catalog page (for context, not placement)
    • The catalog shows which math courses your major expects you to complete (for example, a specific statistics course, finite math, or calculus).
    • It will not tell you if your placement category does not have you starting in that course or if you need a support course.

Your major and your Area 2 placement category decide your starting point. Use the sections on this page to check your placement level, see whether you need ALEKS PPL, and find the Area 2 course recommended for your major.

Chico State follows protocols set by the California State University (CSU) which uses multiple measures to determine readiness for General Education English Composition and Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning (GE Area 1A & 2) coursework. The requirements for admission to a CSU differs from criteria used to advise placement.

Further, as instructed by the CSU Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students program, students are required to enroll in GE Area 1A & 2 courses within their first year (if not already completed). For GE Area 2 at Chico State, your placement category and declared major advises your eligibility and pathway.

Criteria used for Area 2 is based on placement category and delcared major:

At Chico State, most major programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are found in the College of Engineering, Computer Science & Construction Management (ECC) or College of Natural Sciences (NS). The College of Agriculture (AG) and some of our Graduate Programs make up the remainder.

STEM majors are typically math-intensive and often require multiple semesters and/or specific course sequences to progress in the program. Your Area 2 placement category and/or ALEKS PPL assessment guides the courses to enroll in for your major.

What is ALEKS PPL?
Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces-Practice, Preparation, and Learning (ALEKS PPL) is an artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS PPL uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine what a student may or may not know, resources to learn math topics, and reassessment to make sure that the material learned is being retained.

How does ALEKS PPL work?
ALEKS PPL adapts questions based on responses to questions to identify areas that you have "mastered" and areas that may need more development. ALEKS PPL mimics how you solve math problems with a pencil and paper. Instead of using multiple-choice questions, ALEKS PPL walks you through a tutorial on how to submit your answers using the ALEKS PPL tools.

How does ALEKS PPL assess?
ALEKS PPL covers a broad spectrum of math topics from arithmetic through precalculus. You will solve around 25 problems during an assessment. After you respond to a question, ALEKS PPL refines its logic and algorithms to build future questions. You may come across topics that you have not seen before - that is ok! ALEKS PPL is assessing not only what you appear to know, but areas that may need additional study in the modules.

What are examples of math topics assessed?
Examples include: Real Numbers (fractions, integers, and percentages). Equations and Inequalities (linear equations, linear inequalities, systems of linear equations, and quadratic equations). Linear and Quadratic Functions (graphs and functions, linear functions, and parabolas). Exponents and Polynomials (integer components, polynomial arithmetic, factoring, and polynomial equations). Rational and Radical Expressions (rational equations and functions, higher roots, and rational exponents). Geometry (perimeter, area, volume, coordinate geometry). Exponentials and Logarithms (function composites and inverses, logarithmic identities, and equations). Trigonometry (trigonometric functions, identities, and equations).

When should I begin ALEKS PPL?
A proctored assessment score is needed for timely enrollment and schedule options. If you are a current Chico State student, complete all three steps of ALEKS PPL no later than the day before your enrollment appointment (day/time of registration access). If you are an incoming Wildcat, complete all three steps of ALEKS PPL no later than the day before your orientation session. Your first chance to register for is during Orientation (https://www.csuchico.edu/orientation/index.shtml). The more time you study with the learning modules, the more likely to improve your placement or calculus readiness, so giving yourself enough time to practice and prepare and not rush is recommended.

How do I complete ALEKS PPL?
First, start with the initial knowledge check to determine what you already know and identify areas to practice. Next, study and practice for a minimum of three hours in individualized lessons and course modules. Lastly, take the proctored assessment to determine your readiness. A proctored assessment score allows Chico State to accurately advise you about what to take for your first year.

Do I have to be a Chico State student to start?
Yes, you need to have your Chico State Portal log in/single sign on (SSO and Duo) account set up. Your ALEKS PPL code and proctored assessment score can only be used for Chico State, so you should commit to being a Wildcat (submit your Intent to Enroll (https://www.csuchico.edu/admissions/already-applied/intent-to-enroll.shtml)) before starting ALEKS PPL. ALEKS PPL is used at many campuses but assessment scores are not shared between them.

What can I use during an ALEKS PPL assessment?
ALEKS PPL will provide an on screen calculator for solutions or calculations. The assessment requires you to work out solutions with paper and pencil and then enter into ALEKS PPL. That means no Google, calculators, notes, texts, or group solving. ALEKS PPL is meant to help, so give an answer a try and take your time. You may also need a webcam and computer capable of running Zoom, ProctorU, and/or ALEKS PPL. Google Chrome or Firefox browsers are recommended.

How long is the initial knowledge check?
On average, the initial knowledge check takes around 90 minutes but, you will have up to 120 minutes to complete. You will answer about 25 questions depending on your responses. Take your time, proofread your answers, check your work, and trust your instincts. We recommend attempting all of the math problems and only using the "I don't know" button if you don't know where to start. Once you start the initial knowledge check, you have 48 hours to complete that first step and you can log in and out during that time.

I did the initial knowledge check, now what?
Once you have completed the initial assessment, ALEKS PPL will give you a score that reflects the percentage of topics you know of the 314 in the full ALEKS PPL library. The score does not reflect how many of the 25 questions you got right. That score is used to provide a recommendation for the Prep and Learning module to continue studying with as you prepare for a proctored assessment. You can proceed with the recommended course module or, you can also select the course you are hoping to enroll in if it is a higher level. That way your current skills are measured to the skills needed for success in the higher level course.

I’ve been studying, do I really need ALEKS PPL?
After your intitial assessment ALEKS PPL has an understanding of your math reasoning skills and highlights the topics you have mastered, are ready to learn, or have learned once you spend time in the module. Continue with the Prep and Learning module you selected and study for at least three hours. The more time you dedicate now, the more time, money, and courses you might save in the future! You can begin with any topics you are ready to learn. As you work your way through the modules, practice problems are provided to confirm your understanding of the core concepts and materials. Once you consistently get the correct answers, ALEKS PPL considers the topic "mastered" and you move on to choosing another topic. As you complete topic areas, ALEKS PPL continues to update your learning path. The work you put in now will pay off. By working through the concepts, demonstrating your "mastery" of topics, and brushing up you may move further along in the math. This could save a semester or more of preparation, allow you to progress in your maojr. ALEKS PPL allows for better advising and preparation for first year courses. This is especially important for students pursuing STEM majors that may require a sequence of courses prior to precalculus or calculus in your major, or qualifying placement level before sciences. You will not be permitted to take a proctored assessment without completing a minimum of three hours studying. Only proctored assessment scores are considered official and used for placement/advising/enrollment.

How long does a proctored ALEKS PPL assessment take?
On average, an assessment takes around 90 minutes but, you will have up to 120 minutes to complete. Students answer around 25 questions depending on your responses.

What score do I need on the assessment?
Depending on your major and ALEKS PPL result, you will be advised into one of the following:

  • ALEKS PPL Result- Non-STEM: 0-45 Area 2 Ready with Support (MATH 101+001L, 105+005L, 107+007L, or 110+010L)
  • ALEKS PPL Result- Non-STEM: 46+ Area 2 Ready (FINA 101, MATH 101, 105, 107, 108, or 110 without support; or you can select Area 2 STEM courses listed below if you meet the score listed)
  • ALEKS PPL Result- STEM: 0-45 Area 2 Ready with Support (MATH 116+016L)
  • ALEKS PPL Result- STEM: 46-60 Area 2 Ready MATH 118 Trigonometry
  • ALEKS PPL Result- STEM: 61-75 Area 2 Ready MATH 119 Precalculus
  • ALEKS PPL Result- STEM: 76+ Area 2 Ready MATH 109 Survey of Calculus or MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus

Consult the Math for My Major page for more specifics.

Can I fail the ALEKS PPL assessment?
No! This is not a pass/fail or even an exam. ALEKS PPL is meant to determine what math concepts you have a good understanding of and what areas may need some additional development. The initial assessment gives an accurate sense of where you are and tailors modules to prepare for what is to come in the math courses ahead in your major. By taking the time to study and practice after the assessment, you can develop or brush up on topics that you may not have learned about or remember. The proctored assessment provides better insight on how to advise you for your first year courses. An ALEKS PPL result will never be used to decrease your Area 2 placement level.

Can I take more than one proctored assessment?
You are welcome to take a proctored assessment more than once. You have a total of four attempts however, we typically do not recommend more than two. If you hoped to place further ahead in math than your results indicated, take the time to revisit the ALEKS PPL modules, practice, practice, practice, and attempt another proctored assessment. Final scores will be accepted thru the week prior to the semester starting.

How long do I have access to ALEKS PPL?
You have access to ALEKS PPL for a year once you create your account. Even as you begin Area 2 coursework, you can log back in and continue to study. Use ALEKS PPL to go back over topics and review the learning modules for more support, explanations, and resources.

  • You have earned college credit for the Area 2 Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning requirement from a transferable course or AP/IB/CLEP test credit.
  • Review Math for My Major to determine courses for your program. If your major does not specify an Area 2, you have completed graduation requirement.
  • If your major requires a math course that you do not have credit for you, it is likely still required.  Consult with your major advisor for further assistance or course substitution requests.

  • You are able to enroll in courses that require "Area 2 Ready" or "Mathematical Concepts/Quantitative Reasoning Ready" as a prerequisite.
  • You will see a notice in your Student Center related to placement until census of your first semester.
  • View what Chico State has on file to complete your Area 2 credit by logging into your Student Center. Under the "Academic Progress" section, click on Transfer Credit Report to see what course/test credit is being used to satisfy the Area 2 requirement. Additionally, when the course is posted, it will clear the relevant requirements in your Degree Progress Report. Note: if a course/test does not reflect in this area, it may still be in the process of posting to your transfer credit report.
  • Per CSU Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students, students are required to enroll in Area 1A & 2 courses within their first year (if not already completed).

  • For STEM (math-intensive) majors, you may still need to complete ALEKS PPL to determine readiness for calculus (or precalculus).
  • The default course to start with in the STEM pathway is MATH 118 Trigonometry. To enroll in a higher-level math course such as MATH 119 Precalculus, MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I, or MATH 109 Survey of Calculus, you must either have transferable credit, or complete the ALEKS PPL assessment process to demonstrate readiness.
  • Example: you receive credit for MATH 105 Statistics from an AP Statistics exam to meet Area 2 in General Education. However, you are pursuing Mechanical Engineering (STEM) and MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus is the first math course required in your major. The completion of MATH 105 Statistics does not determine readiness for MATH 120. Therefore, ALEKS PPL would be used to assess readiness for MATH 120 (or MATH 119 Precalculus).
  • High school experience in trigonometry, math analysis, precalculus, and/or calculus is beneficial for building your math foundation. However, ALEKS PPL will assess your mastery of concepts and provide ways to study and prepare for appropriate course(s) if needed.

  • Review Math for My Major to determine what course to enroll in your first year. If your major does not specify an Area 2, you will be enrolled into a math course based on schedule and enrollment availability.
  • You are strongly encouraged to brush up with ALEKS PPL prior to the start of your Area 2 Ready with Support course. Studying and completing modules in the summer or winter prior assists with the transition to college-level math courses.

  • You will be pre-enrolled into an Area 2 Ready with Support course as determined by your major pathway. It is recommended that you attempt this course in your first semester.
  • A proctored ALEKS PPL assessment can be used to boost your placement beyond your initial level.
  • You will see a "hold" message under the Tasks area of your Student Center (see below). The  reminder will remain on your account until the requirement has been completed.
  • This notice will not prevent you from adding courses however, you are not able to enroll in courses that require "Area 2 Ready" or "GE Mathematical Concepts/Quantitative Reasoning Ready" as a prerequisite. After you have completed an Area 2 with Support course, you will be able considered "Area 2 Ready".
  • Per CSU Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students, students are required to enroll in GE 1A & 2 courses within their first year (unless already completed).

  • You are strongly encouraged to use ALEKS PPL to potentially boost your placement level, practice concepts, and/or prepare for major courses as your program is math-intensive. The more time you dedicate in ALEKS PPL before starting Chico State, the better equipped you will be for course(s).
  • The default course for STEM majors who are GE Math Ready with Support is MATH 116+016L College Algebra with Support (5 units). Upon completion, students would move to MATH 118 Trigonometry (3 units) and then either MATH 119 Precalculus (4 units), MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I (4 units), or MATH 109 Survey of Calculus (4 units) depending on course outcomes, major, and math confidence. Using ALEKS PPL to boost placement to "Area 2 Ready" reduces the time to calculus.
  • High school experience in trigonometry, math analysis, precalculus, and/or calculus is beneficial for building your math foundation. However, ALEKS PPL can help prepare, practice, and assess your mastery of concepts.

Area 2 Conditional

  • Your General Education Area 2 Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning placement is currently conditional.
  • An initial review of your coursework, grades, GPA and/or test scores determined that additional information is needed to finalize your placement.
  • A further review of your satisfactory completion of senior year courses, updated GPA calculations, and verification of eligible coursework is required for final placement.

  • If the Office of Admissions emailed you requesting final grade confirmation(s), your placement is contingent upon those grades. Please submit the form to the Office of Admissions to expedite the review process.
  • Alternatively, your final placement will be determined upon review of your official high school transcripts, test scores, or other supporting documents.
  • For more information about conditional placement, contact the Office of Admissions.

An ALEKS PPL proctored assessment can also be used to determine placement and inform the Area 2 course you are advised to take based on your major.

International Student Placement

Student in math class

As an incoming international student, unless you have completed a transferable course, your placement into General Education Area 2 Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning (Area 2) defaults to Area 2 Ready with Support.

For your first semester at Chico State, your schedule will be enrolled for you including an Area 2 Ready with Support course based on your declared major

  • STEM: If you are pursuing a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major, you are highly encouraged to complete an ALEKS PPL proctored assessment to determine your readiness for STEM courses and the pathway to calculus.

  • Non-STEM: If you think placement into Area 2 Ready with Support does not accurately capture your abilities, you can complete a proctored ALEKS PPL assessment to determine  your placement level.
