Research Experience Program - REU/RET

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Program will allow 8 undergraduates and 2 teachers to work on mathematics research with faculty mentors during a 7-week residential summer program at California State University, Chico. During Summer 2026, the program will take place June 15 - July 31 (more details to come), plus a conference presentation the following year.

Research Areas

During the Summer of 2026 there will be two faculty mentors supervising research teams.

  • Dr. Guillermo Alesandroni will be supervising research team(s) in commutative algebra and combinatorics.
  • Dr. Daniel Vallières will be supervising research team(s) in number theory and graph theory.

Financial Support

All participants will receive a stipend in the amount of $4200 for students or $5600 stipend for teachers. In addition, non-local participants will receive funding for travel and housing.

Application Deadline

The application form, essays, unofficial transcripts, and a letter of recommendation must be received by the application deadline of February 2, 2026 in order to receive full consideration. The supporting materials (essays, transcripts, letter of recommendation) should be sent via email to John Lind (mathreu@csuchico.edu).

Candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents (and at least 18 years of age), who are intending to continue undergraduate studies (or K-12 teaching) in the Fall. Women and students from underrepresented minorities in mathematics are particularly encouraged to apply.

Location

Chico, California is located in the northeast corner of the Sacramento Valley near the foothills of the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range. The university campus is located in Chico’s walkable downtown with easy access to restaurants, shopping, museums, and coffee shops. Chico is also home to Bidwell Park, an urban park boasting over 3500 acres, which offers opportunities for hiking and swimming.
