Explore the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of the world’s second largest continent and gain fresh perspectives on African societies. This interdisciplinary program examines the continent’s diverse traditions, languages, and global influence of a continent home to more than 1.3 billion people, 50 countries, and 1,500 languages.
From art and literature to politics and human rights, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Africa’s role in shaping the world. Study its diverse and complex historical, political, and social concerns, along with its astonishing range of human experience, thought, and art. You’ll look beyond the stereotypes into the complex worlds, vibrant peoples, and extraordinary opportunities.
This minor is ideal for careers in education, international development, public policy, or cultural advocacy, this minor equips you with the knowledge and skills to engage thoughtfully with global issues.
Courses cover African literature, history, geography, and politics. You’ll study topics like colonization, liberation movements, and contemporary challenges to gain a holistic view of the continent.

Students are encouraged to study abroad in Africa. The California State University International Programs offer opportunities in Ghana and South Africa, through which you can fulfill several GE requirements, and there are many other University-sponsored options on the continent.
