Dive into the world of food, farming, and the global industry that powers it all. Take courses on plant, animal, and soil science in one of the nation’s top colleges for agriculture and specialize in your area of expertise through classes in economics, marketing, and operations. 

This degree will give you the tools to manage complex operations of small to medium-sized ag businesses and give you a working knowledge of the modern food and farming industry at all sizes and approaches.Imagine all the different businesses involved in getting food to your plate. From learning the science behind how plants and animals grow to basics like transportation and financing, you’ll take your studies beyond the classroom to experience businesses in action and apply your knowledge with an internship or project at the University Farm. Graduates will be ready to take on entry-level management positions or go to graduate school.

Where Ag and Business Intersect

Agriculture is an age-old yet ever-evolving industry. After mastering the basics on plant and animal science, you’ll dive deep into the latest in food safety, pests and diseases, climate change and resource management, government regulations, and the impact of technologies like drones and GPS systems.

Find Your Place

The jobs available are as diverse as agriculture itself. Students can pursue careers in agricultural production management, food systems, agricultural marketing or sales, agricultural economics, natural resources management, public policy, and agricultural finance. Some top employers include:

Ag is well known for its opportunities beyond the classroom. Immerse yourself in a nationally competitive club, work side by side with faculty on an undergraduate research project of your choice, or travel to a different country to witness its practices firsthand.

    The University Farm is your living laboratory. Work side by side with faculty to compare cover crops, conduct soil tests in the Regenerative Agriculture Demonstration Lab, explore aquaponics, and more.

Choose from over a dozen student clubs and organizations devoted to all aspects of agriculture. Represent Chico State at national competitions on our livestock judging team, join the Alpha Gamma Rho or Alpha Zeta professional societies, or participate in the Society of Ag Managers, to name a few.

Learn in the Field

Whether you want to manage sales for the Organic Vegetable Project or conduct research into fava bean trials at the University Farm, you’ll find internships aplenty. You can also intern with the University’s Agribusiness Institute, providing expertise to farmers and ranchers in the North State.
