    On Campus

Biochemists study the molecules of life. With our Biochemistry minor, you’ll gain a solid foundation in organic and analytical chemistry, plus a more intensive study of biochemistry through work in the lab.

You’ll learn about the chemical processes that happen in living cells and how those impact the function and health of plants, animals, and humans. This field of science blends chemistry and biology and is essential for developing everything from vaccines and medications to sustainable agricultural practices. The minor prepares you for careers in biotechnology, research, and health-related fields.

Students learn about topics in their General Chemistry I early in the semester.

An Exploratory Curriculum

Your courses will include a thorough introduction to general, organic, and biological chemistry, along with quantitative analysis. You’ll also gain hands-on experience through lab work separating, identifying, and/or analyzing biological materials by modern procedures.

Student Today, Industry Leader Tomorrow

Science isn’t a spectator sport. The best learning happens by doing. You’ll study alongside faculty who have as much expertise outside the classroom as inside. By the time you graduate, you’ll have built the skills and confidence that only comes with experience.

Skills you’ll gain include:

  • Management and leadership skills
  • Research
  • Statistical analysis and quantitative techniques
  • Modern lab procedures, such as spectrophotometry, chromatography, electrophoresis, enzymology, fluorimetry, and high-speed centrifugation

Unlocking Your Potential

This field of science blends chemistry and biology and is essential for developing everything from vaccines and medications to sustainable agricultural practices. The minor in biochemistry pairs well with almost any research or medical-related major.

Some examples include:

Robert Knight (left) synthesizes beta amino acids as Olivia Hoy (right) works on making influenza drugs as part of the Chemistry Summer Research Institute

Create Connections

Our Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) Club has received recognition as an outstanding club from the American Chemistry Society for many years in a row. As a member, you will host and attend events like National Chemistry Week and High School Chemistry Day, have access to tutoring, and network with peers.
