If you're curious about how money, policies, and markets impact and shape the world, you're already engaged in the work of an economist. Our program studies the economic choices people, governments, and businesses make, and relates them to everyday issues like inflation, economic growth, climate change, and emerging technologies.
With an emphasis on developing critical thinking, analytical, and quantitative skills, our grads are ready to make a positive impact in any professional setting—and pursue high-paying, competitive careers, or begin graduate school.
With small classes and engaged, caring faculty, our program focuses on three main areas to help you champion the economic landscape: critical thinking and problem solving, data analysis and quantitative skills, and research, writing, and public speaking.
Our graduates develop the skills to analyze complex issues in our economy—and the problem-solving abilities to address them. These valuable tools can open doors to careers in finance, business, consulting, or government. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook projects strong sustained growth for economists, with average salaries of $115,730 per year.
Companies and government agencies that currently employ Chico State graduates from the economics program include:
Elevate your learning experience outside the classroom. The Economics Club and the International Honor Society in Economics provide regular gatherings to connect with other students in the major, industry speaker presentations, internship and research opportunities, and outings.

As a master’s student in political science, Edward Berdan has bloomed into a scholar destined to change the study of AAPI politics.
