Geology is a gateway to the incredible 3.5-billion-year history of life on Earth and understanding how this planet works. As a student in the minor, you will develop a comprehensive, yet concise, understanding of Earth processes, exploring the way water shapes our landscapes, how mountains are formed, and much more.

With the great North State as our backdrop, this highly active discipline puts you in the field, working with faculty and peers on labs and research that applies to almost any discipline, including STEM and wildland management.

Exploration Beyond the Classroom

Our program is built around outdoor exploration and hands-on experience. From working on collaborative projects to learning cutting-edge research methods, your minor in geology incorporates a range of important skills that prepare you for work in any laboratory or job in the field.

Some additional skills you’ll develop in this minor include:

  • Communication
  • Management and leadership skills
  • Research and analysis
  • Strategic planning and community outreach

A Dynamic Program

A minor in geology enhances your overall understanding of the planet’s natural composition, history, and long-term environmental challenges. This supports your work in any biological science major or program involving outdoor fieldwork.

Majors that pair well with this minor include:
