As you study the cultures and languages of Chicanx/Latinx peoples, as well as the unique historical and contemporary issues faced by these groups, you will uncover the critical contributions they have made to our community, state, nation, and world.
You’ll learn to examine these cultures through a framework of social justice and anti-racism as you engage in lively discussions and develop your skills in critical thinking, reading, and writing. And you will do all that with great support from an advisor dedicated to helping you succeed.
Courses in activism, history, social justice, film, and more provide a solid foundation for students who go on to take classes in gender and sexuality, race and ethnicities, arts and humanities, and social science. The major is designed to provide an in-depth and interdisciplinary understanding of the unique qualities of Chicanx/Latinx communities.

The unique skills you gain in this major—the ability to see beneath the surface and analyze complex problems, as well as a sensitivity to the value of human diversity—will not only enhance your skills as a leader but also make you a desirable employee. Many of our graduates are in positions of leadership and service, filling a growing demand for professionals in the worlds of management, health and community service, public administration, non-profits, public policy, and more.
You’ll benefit from several special opportunities to do hands-on work that directly benefits the community and connects you with faculty and your peers in the program.
We care about who you are, where you have been, and where you want to go. You’ll connect with an advisor for one-on-one meetings throughout your academic journey.
You’ll complete an internship that provides real-world experiences in the areas of advocacy and activism. It’s not only a resume builder, but a practical experience as well.
We are committed to intersectionality, meaning you will study peoples and cultures who have been marginalized within the Latinx community, including Black, LGBTQ+, and undocumented people.
