Mathematics is the incredible language that allows us to understand patterns and develop abstractions. It's the science of numbers, structure, shape, and change.
And math isn't just for mathematicians—it's used in so many fields, including business, education, physics, biology, and computer science. Mathematicians know how to think analytically and critically, and how to formulate and solve problems. This means that if you pursue a career in mathematics, you'll have numerous job opportunities waiting for you. If you combine a BS in mathematics with a teaching credential, you could inspire the next generation as a high school math teacher.
As a student in the BS degree program, your classes will include a thorough introduction to mathematics. In addition to coursework in geometry, algebra, and calculus, you’ll learn computational mathematics and programming. You will also take classes designed for your chosen field of study.
Choose a path that will take you where you want to go. Whether that's teaching, as a data scientist, or in the pharmaceutical industry, your potential is limitless
Gain an extensive understanding of applied and core mathematics to develop strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This path prepares you for roles in industry and government as a data scientist, software engineer, or financial analyst, or to pursue an advanced degree.
Master the art of problem solving through a comprehensive curriculum that includes numerical analysis, mathematical modeling, and a variety of strategies and techniques. You will apply your expertise to solve a wide range of challenges in physics, biology, engineering, and chemistry.
Fulfill the requirements for the single subject preparation program in mathematics and begin your journey toward teaching high school math. You'll first earn your BS in mathematics education, then enter a 1-year credential program. When you graduate, you'll be ready to start teaching.
If you're looking to get your degree and high school teaching credential in just four years, this is the option for you. You will be able to earn both a bachelor's degree in mathematics education and obtain your teaching credential.
Statisticians help us understand what data is trustworthy. In this program, you will gain a solid foundation in mathematics, computing, and analysis to understand and analyze data. You will find many career opportunities in cutting-edge research in applied fields such as medicine, business, and insurance.
Your degree in mathematics and your passion for problem solving give you the freedom to chart your own career path in virtually any industry, including tech, health care, and government. You can become a math teacher, actuary, data scientist, algorithmic engineer, entrepreneur, financial analyst, and more.
Find the support and tools you need to become a problem solver and leader. Through research projects, seminars, and coding sessions, you can strengthen your public speaking, presentation, and critical thinking skills.
Hear and learn from speakers from across the country who are making breakthroughs at the leading edge of mathematical research.
Bring your computer, coding projects, and questions to our welcoming and supportive coding sessions. This is part of the Data Science Initiative at Chico State to promote data science, research, and cross-discipline collaborations.
Apply to spend a summer conducting innovative mathematics research while earning a stipend. Our Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Program allows undergraduates to work alongside our expert faculty.
Need additional support with your homework or prepping for an exam? Stop by our dedicated tutoring lab to get help from our dedicated peer tutors.
Join Math Club to make friends, go on conference trips to places like Santa Cruz and Whiskeytown Lake, hear interesting guest lectures, or enjoy a night bowling, playing board games, or watching movies.
For recent graduate and future high school math teacher Taylor Anderson, the journey is the destination.
After traveling the world, serving in the US Army, and finally completing his college degree, Kris Walker is ready for the next stage—pursuing his PhD in statistics at Carnegie Mellon University.
