Microbiology allows you to see and study the world of tiny organisms around us that support life on our planet. As a student in the major, you’ll conduct fieldwork in creeks and valleys, experiments in state-of-the-art labs, and receive mentorship from faculty dedicated to your success.
Our dynamic program focuses on helping you build the analytical, technical, and communication skills needed to turn science into solutions—covering everything from developing vaccines and medications to sustainable resource management strategies used by private, state, and federal agencies.
From understanding the principles of biology and genetics to understanding immunology and analyzing live experiments, you’ll build the knowledge and skills to observe, grow, and analyze microbial and mammalian cells from the natural spaces around us.
Let your skills and passion guide you toward one of two options in the major.
Prepare for a meaningful career in biotechnology, environmental or industrial microbiology, pharmaceutical and biomedical research, or graduate studies.
In a world of constant environmental change and challenges, become a clinical laboratory scientist or public health microbiologist
Our graduates are equipped with the technical, critical thinking, and communication skills essential to be leaders in professional laboratories, classrooms, and in the private sector.
Some of our top recruiters include:
Get started by choosing from organizations like the Microbiology Club, the Biology Honors Society, the Pre-Med Association, or Pre-Dental Society. Every year in May, students are encouraged to present their independent research, or their research from coursework, in poster format for judging in the Annual Student Research Symposium.
Biology field work starts on campus. Big Chico Creek flows less than 100 yards from your classroom. The creek is bordered by a narrow riparian habitat under restoration, providing a backdrop for both your aquatic and terrestrial work.
The biology department hosts and makes use of the Ahart Herbarium, an Entomology collection, the Vertebrate Museum, the Gateway Science Museum, and a greenhouse—all in support of teaching and research.
Hikmat Abou Shahla has spent his formative years stepping up to help during seasons of global crisis. He is set to graduate and continue on the path of service.
Although Nayellie Barragan-Mejia has faced myriad health issues and social barriers to pursuing her goals, she has found encouragement from a network of support at Chico State.
Whether spending a year as a visiting scientist at one of the top microbiology programs in the world or publishing a paper in one of the globe’s leading microbiology journals, Emily Fleming is emerging as a scholar of note.
Critical research by faculty at Chico State, UC Boulder, and USGS aims to identify preventative insight to help mitigate future wildfires.
