Multicultural and gender studies is the academic face of diversity and inclusion at Chico State, striving to embody, promote, and celebrate the values of multicultural respect, awareness, and understanding.

Our online program is guided and led by a diverse community of faculty and advocates. You’ll examine how issues like gender, sexuality, socioeconomic class, ability, race, and ethnicity impact peoples’ lives and lived experiences—cultivating your passion for social justice through informed activism. You’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to be a changemaker at any organization or business, become a leading voice for activism, or be ready to begin a postgraduate degree in law, policymaking, or research.

Collective Growth Mindset

Learn and grow in a tight-knit environment that focuses on developing critical skills and cultural competencies. Core classes dive deep into gender, race, sexuality, science, and society, providing a solid foundation to help you orient to advanced classes in intersectionality.

Major Options

We offer two options within the major, providing room to specialize based on your preferred area of research.

  • a group of people holding microphones at the women's conference

    Women’s Studies

The women's studies option is based on core multicultural and gender studies courses but is focused on women and feminist analysis.

  • two smiling people sitting side by side

    General

The general option is a comprehensive study of cultural analysis; cross-cultural and interethnic study; the study of the role of gender in culture; and close examination of a specific ethnic group, such as Black, Latinx, or Asian studies.

Dare to Lead

Our graduates use their deep understanding of social justice issues and insight into systemic solutions to become advocates, guides, and leaders for change; they become social workers, policymakers, community organizers, and leaders at private and governmental organizations.

Some organizations where our graduates work include:

  • The Boys and Girls Club
  • Catalyst Domestic Violence Services
  • California School Employees Association
  • Chico Advocates for a Responsible Economy
  • EPIC 'Ohana
  • Volunteers of America
