At Chico State, nature is your classroom. Our bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences focuses on science education, giving you the knowledge, tools, and real-world experiences to teach and inspire others. You’ll explore living ecosystems, geological processes, and physical laws—and learn how to translate that knowledge into dynamic, engaging learning experiences.

This program is built for future science educators: whether you plan to teach middle or general high school science, lead programs at museums or nature centers, or foster science curiosity in your community, you’ll graduate ready to shape how others see and understand the natural world.

Think Critically and Learn Actively

You’ll study alongside faculty who combine deep scientific knowledge and training in science education. From physical and life sciences to biology and chemistry, every course is taught through an inquiry-focused lens. You’ll engage in hands-on research, design investigations, and more—so you don’t just know science; you know how to teach it.

A High-Reward, In-Demand Career

Science teachers are in high demand—especially those prepared to deliver inclusive and innovative instruction. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, middle school teaching employment is projected to grow by 8 percent from 2016 to 2026, and shortages continue at the high school level. In California alone, more than 33,000 new science and math teachers will be needed in the next decade.

You’ll be graduating into a field where your expertise—and your passion—can make a real difference. This science education degree positions you to step into one of the most vital and rewarding careers in STEM education.

“It’s such a privilege to have been able to work on creating and building exhibits while in college, because people don’t usually get that type of opportunity.”
—Cole Schmitt (Biological Sciences, Science Education ’22)

Active Learning in Science

Science isn’t a spectator sport—and science education isn’t, either. At Chico State, you’ll engage in research, collaborate on instructional design projects, conduct labs, and co-teach or observe lessons in local classrooms. By the time you graduate, you’ll not only know how science works—you’ll have practiced bringing it alive for others.

    Gain Teaching Experience

You’ll gain early teaching experience through the Gateway Science Museum, a science and natural history museum located on campus. From designing exhibits to crafting lessons for local middle schools, you'll develop skills and real experiences in the museum, classrooms, and beyond.

    Build Your Community

With small class sizes and strong faculty support, you’ll grow as both a scientist and a teacher, surrounded by people who share your purpose. Join the Chico State chapter of the National Science Teaching Association to build leadership skills, connect with fellow future educators and explore current issues in science education.
